Brock Commons Tallwood House case study released
Wood WORKS! BC is pleased to release a case study on Brock Commons Tall Wood House, a new 18-storey mass timber hybrid student residence at the University of British Columbia (UBC). Now an iconic tall wood building in Canada, it currently stands as one of the tallest contemporary hybrid mass timber structures in the world. This 54-metre tall building, featuring an innovative mass timber structural system using cross-laminated timber, demonstrates economic viability, repeatability and adaptability for other building types and uses. The study, funded by Natural Resources Canada, provides a technical overview of the building, the design and construction process, and explores the wood innovations which could become templates for future taller wood buildings. Mass timber is making its mark on the residential and commercial sectors, and is now making inroads into a new sector which has long been dominated by concrete tilt-up and steel-frame construction – industrial buildings.
This case study examines three recently completed industrial buildings in BC, each of which uses engineered mass timber products and systems in a distinct and different way. Together they offer insights into how industrial construction might evolve to offer greater environmental performance, speed and flexibility of construction at little additional cost over traditional methods. The 14th annual event, organized and hosted by Wood WORKS! BC, honoured excellence in wood building and design, and recognized leadership and innovation in wood use.
