TREET – The World’s Tallest Timber Building
Marina Trifkovic, Master of Architecture, ARTEC, Norway

This ambitious project shows that it is possible to build urban housing with high density and at the same time use environmentally friendly materials.  The project doesn’t “invent” anything new, it simply applies products that already exist in a new way, pushing the limit of what has been done before. Through the perspective of the architect, attendees will see the advantages and challenges of timber high-rise construction and prefabrication. Treet is a residential building located in Bergen, Norway. The structural design utilized laminated timber.  The apartments were created as modules off-site. When completed (Fall 2015), the building will be 49,4m from entrance level.

Michael Marshall, COO, Macdonald & Lawrence Timber Framing, Cobble Hill, BC

From 60-degrees North at Mt Sima in Yukon Territory, to 79-degrees South at Cape Royds in Antarctica, M&L has designed and delivered timber buildings on six continents. The broad range of our work has fuelled our approach to wood design which is heavily influenced by timber craft traditions. From medieval castles and trebuchets to innovative ‘adrenaline architecture’ such as our aerial ropes courses, zip lines and giant swings, the tremendous variety of our projects all have one thing in common: the structural use of timber. Join me for a presentation of our work, and a discussion of the lessons-learned (including some tough ones). Case studies will include the recently completed ‘Cloudwalk’ at Hokkaido Japan, the expedition bases of Scott and Shackleton, a ropes course in Ft McMurray, and others.

Mass Timber – Engineering Fabrication and Erection

Timber is in the midst of being rediscovered as a primary building material. With the advent of mass timber products which are economical and reliable, new applications are arising across all building and structure types. Knowing which mass timber product is most suitable for different situations is key to achieving buildable, performing and cost-efficient structures.  An emphasis on prefabrication of these timber panels complete with integrated services enables fast erection times and high quality control.


Lucas Epp

Lucas is a structural engineer trained in Canada, working abroad in London and New Zealand for 7 years prior to moving back to Vancouver to lead StructureCraft’s Engineering department. His experience in the UK working with some of the world’s leading architects working on projects from London’s Olympic Stadium to a 300m tower in Kuwait City has given him a diverse range of skills, particularly in complex analysis and geometry. He has taught at ETH Zurich and the Architectural Association, and has a keen interest in the intersection of architecture and engineering.  Lucas has had a lifelong exposure to timber, working at StructureCraft from a young age on the shop floor. He has been involved in many of the company’s signature projects, including the 2010 Olympic Speedskating Oval and an 80m clear span footbridge in Banff. Lucas is leading the structural engineering on the 7 storey T3 Minneapolis mass timber office building which is currently under construction.

Michael Marshall

Michael has worked in the timber industry for most of his career, including time in automated and digital manufacturing, sales and marketing, and management. Having grown up in a Washington State logging family of nine, he bears a fitting work ethic and a no-nonsense approach to performance and leadership. Michael’s strengths lie in his ability to create clarity from confusion and to communicate that clarity to the wide spectrum of stakeholders involved in our work. A strong listener, our clients connect easily with Michael as he works to identify and address the challenges of a particular project. Michael received a Bachelor of Science degree in Social and Behavioural Sciences from Linfield College in McMinnville, Oregon and a Master’s degree in Organizational Leadership from Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington.

Michael is Chief Operating Officer of Macdonald & Lawrence, where he oversees the business operations and project delivery, including business development, design, prefabrication, and installation.

Marina Trifkovic

Marina has a Master of Architecture from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). She has been involved with the Treet project from the start in 2010 and has been the main architect since 2012.
