Simplicity is inherent to sustainable design. The designer’s “build only what is necessary” philosophy results in simple and, some might say, sparse spaces and buildings. The art of balancing this minimal aesthetic is in the thoughtful selection of materials with integrity and that are inherently touchable.

Wood has become that material in the designers’ spaces and essential quality of the Obakki space. It lends warmth and counterpoint to the rugged simplicity of the concrete walls and razor edged drywall features. It asks to be touched. The “Shattered” millwork and large raw blocks of wood help organize the space and define the touchable surfaces of the store. Since opening the store there has been a fascinating interaction between patrons and these concrete walls. The clear grain of the wood formwork is often quite misunderstood to be real wood treated to be concrete walls.
