This year’s recipient of the Engineer’s Award was faced with a unique geometric challenge – to create two tight radius domes with two different curvatures out of wood.

The sixteen foot radius portal dome (one of two domes on the site) has two skins, one for the exterior titanium tile clad roof membrane and one for the plywood skin that forms the interior skin. Thirty five prefabricated tapered panels using profiled 2 X 6 trim ends form the structural load bearing interior dome. The outer exterior skin was then formed using radial fins made out of profiled 3/8 inch OSB. The dome was prefabricated in two halves and shipped to the site for assembly and installation. The interior skin is applied on site composed of radiating maple plywood veneers.
