Western Red Cedar – Residential

  The exterior wall in this 5524 sq. m. complex is a rain screen ventilated assembly clad in Western Red Cedar. The cedar T & G siding was selected for its long history of durability and as an aesthetic compliment to the adjacent natural landscape and rock outcroppings of Mount Tolmie which is a dramatic presence along one side of the complex. The siding is a tight-joint detail using the milled reverse side of the boards, this produces a less articulated surface and a more refined expression at the same time to the medium density mixed commercial urbanized area one block away on the opposite side of the complex.
Wood Cladding was chosen as it is considered the most environmentally-friendly building material available; a renewable resource, locally available, with low embodied energy and reduced carbon footprint. Cedar in particular is ideal due to its rot resistant properties.
