The Gateway Lodge project is a 148,000 sq ft seniors’ long-term care facility providing complex care and assisted living. Wood is used on this project because of its warmth, tactile character, durability and, ultimately, its ability to create a residential environment and home-like setting for its elderly residents. The exposed wood structure in the social spaces, community hall, building entrances and garden pavilions create a strong, modern and materially expressive architectural aesthetic that reflects the uniqueness of northern B.C., the local forest economy and natural environment. The prefabricated, panelized wall system by Mitsui Homes Canada Inc. reduced the overall construction period, an important consideration in working in a cold, northern climate, and achieved a higher quality installation than conventional on-site construction.

Wood materials used:

  • Prefabricated panelized wall system by Mitsui Homes Canada Inc.
  • Engineered glulam beams and columns by Structurlam Products Ltd – Douglas fir coast region species
  • TJI® floor joints – iLevel Trus Joist® by Weyerhaeuser
  • Engineered roof trusses by Epic Trusses
  • Roof sheathing – 16 mm T&G Douglas fir
  • Floor sheathing – 19 mm T&G Douglas fir
  • Shear Walls Sheathing – 13 mm Douglas fir
