Shuswap Cabin is a 2300 sq ft, single-family residence completed in 2009. One of the main design objectives of the project was to seek ways of marrying a traditional cabin vernacular with a contemporary, modern, open-concept space tailored to its site. This objective was achieved with the extensive use of wood.
Fir and cedar elements reference the native lakeside site and imbue the clean, simple spaces with warmth and texture. Juxtaposed to the varying soft wood tones is a complementing monolithic concrete floor and robust slate fireplace. Together with this supporting cast of natural materials, wood ultimately works to shape and define the spaces of the home seamlessly, from inside to out.
Wood materials used:
- Douglas fir glulam beams/posts
- Douglas fir exposed roof decking
- Western red cedar siding
- Edge grain fir veneer for all millwork
- Custom dining table made from salvaged plywood strips
