Wood Innovation
Austria House | 2010 Olympic Winter Games | Whistler, BC
Equilibrium Consulting Inc.
Austria House is a 2700 sq ft media centre and is the first Canadian Passiv Haus. Solid wood wall and roof elements were chosen to achieve stringent thermal insulation and air tightness requirements of the Passiv Haus standard. Structurally, the use of CLT panels enabled a flat slab (with no beams) wood structure for the roof and floor elements, transferring both vertical and lateral forces. Dowelled solid wood panels provided shear wall resistance. The Austria House stands as a project pioneering the domestic use of the innovative and emerging utilization of CLT panels as structural elements.
Wood materials used:
Austria House features first Canadian application of Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) panels for roof and floor structure and diagonally dowelled solid wood panels for wall structure. The latter does not contain any adhesive.
