       Â
The Squamish Adventure Centre is a striking example of the developing skill of British Columbia’s timber frame industry. It shows how a remarkable 21st-century architectural concept can be executed in wood quickly, economically and with a high level of precision and finish by BC designers and craftsmen.
Wood provided an affordable and beautiful way to express the organic skeletal form of the Adventure Centre structure. The building showcases the beautiful Douglas fir timber-frame wood products for which the coastal British Columbia forest industry is becoming world famous and leads the way for future projects in wood.
The building’s dramatic curving roof structure was conceived by the architect as a simple organic form evocative of the soaring eagles that migrate to the Squamish Valley each year. Constructed of primarily locally sourced and manufactured Douglas fir timber, the structure comprises some 1000 uniquely crafted elements that were detailed and precision milled in the finest tradition of Canadian timber frame building.
The Squamish Adventure Centre floor area is 5,773 sq ft.
Wood materials used:
- 190 Lft of glazing in the Grand Hall/South Wing
- 160 Lft of glazing in the Office Hall/North Wing – soaring from 11 feet to 26 feet in height
- 60,000 bd ft of No. 1 structural and better Douglas fir timber
