This comprehensive workshop will recreate the design thinking, technical challenges and advanced BIM/VDC work that was behind two new innovative offices using a mass timber structure. There is a transformation underway in our built environment with wood products and building systems, including mass timber, emerging as structural materials in low-rise commercial construction. Pre-fabrication, speed of construction and a more sustainable outcome are a few of the benefits realized when using wood in this building type. This informative half-day workshop will demonstrate the innovations and new solutions for using mass timber in two new projects; an office and a mixed-use low-rise commercial building, both on the Lower Mainland. The presenters will navigate code requirements, share their design thinking, technical challenges and solutions, and walk you through an integrated design and construction process.
Presentation #1: BCBC: New Prescriptive Allowances for Low-rise Commercial Wood Buildings
Presentation #2: PH1: Integrated Design and Construction in a Mixed-use Office
