VANCOUVER, Sept. 17, 2021 – Leadership in structural and architectural wood use by local governments was recognized at the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) Convention in Vancouver this week. Five local governments were presented with 2021 Community Recognition Awards for use of wood in their community projects by Wood WORKS! BC. The province-wide awards are presented annually to communities that have been exemplary advocates for wood. Media release BC awards 2020 Vancouver, BC, July 14, 2021 – The Canadian Wood Council’s Wood WORKS! BC Program recognizes excellence in contemporary design and building with wood in Vancouver at the virtual 16th Wood Design Awards in B.C. Many design and building professionals joined the virtual event, including architects, structural engineers, members of project teams, local government, industry sponsors and guests.

Wood WORKS! BC is pleased to announce its latest case study on low-rise commercial buildings. This case study examines three recently completed low-rise commercial buildings in BC featuring mass timber products and systems as viable and innovative structural solutions. These projects demonstrate reduced carbon impacts, accelerated speed of construction and enhanced building performance, and showcase mass timber and technologically advanced wood systems as a new paradigm. This is the 16th year that Wood WORKS! BC has recognized and celebrated the successes of communities around the province which have built projects using wood.
The nomination form for the 2021 Community Recognition Awards is available online HERE. If you know of a wood structure that was completed by a local government in the last four years, please consider nominating it – it will only take 5 minutes! Self nominations are welcomed and encouraged.

Four-Storey Building Receives Support from NRCan’s Green Construction through Wood Program
VANCOUVER, March 2, 2021 — The new head office for internationally-renowned structural engineering firm, Fast + Epp, is being recognized by the Canadian Wood Council and the BC forest industry for its innovation and ingenuity in wood design and building, and for being selected for funding support under Natural Resources Canada’s Green Construction through Wood (GC Wood) Program. The hybrid mass timber building, located near downtown Vancouver on Yukon Street, is among the first office buildings in Vancouver to use mass timber as a structural material, and will showcase the same structural innovations and technologies that are at the forefront of their consulting practice. The GCWood Program aims to broaden the awareness of wood as a sustainable and renewable construction material and to increase the domestic capacity for wood in Canadian construction. READ MORE…
