SPEAKERS + TOPICS

Russell Acton
Architect AIBC AAA SAA OAA
Principal,
Acton Ostry Architects
Russell Acton embraces the use of engineered wood products and strives to stay current with ever-changing mass timber applications. In 2010, In 2013, Russell served as an evaluator for the Tall Wood Demonstration Projects Initiative sponsored by National Resources Canada. Most recently, in 2017 Russell participated on the BC Provincial Wood Innovation Panel organized by Forestry Innovation Investment Ltd.
Extraordinarily Ordinary: Brock Commons Tallwood House
Brock Commons Tallwood House is the tallest contemporary mass wood building in the world. To reduce costs and facilitate approvals, a “Keep it Simple” design approach was used that features encapsulation of the mass wood structure. Brock Commons aspires to be a model for a future featuring extraordinarily ordinary, encapsulated, mid-rise mass wood buildings that are quick, clean, and cost effective to build, while maximizing carbon sequestering and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in cities.
André Rioux
Vice President, Sales and Development, AcoustiTECH a division of FINITEC GROUP, St. Lambert?de?Lauzon, QC
Since the creation of AcoustiTECH in 2000, Andre has been traveling all over Canada, the United States and the UAE to make presentations to groups of architects, project managers, general contractors, flooring contractors and more. Andre’s experience combined with the expertise of his team has resulted in AcoustiTECH being the number one reference in the field of acoustics for new and existing buildings. After over 17 years, Andre continues to enjoy meeting with professionals and collaborating in the success of their projects.
The Challenges and Solutions of Acoustics in Mass Timber Buildings
This presentation will benefit any building and design professionals working in mass timber constructions such as architects, designers, acoustic engineers, builders/developers and general contractors.
Attendees will learn how to:

  • Define general acoustics principles
  • Demystify sound propagation of noise in different materials
  • Demystify sound insulation of floor/ceiling assemblies
  • Recognize the proper acoustic solution

Through case studies and examples attendees will learn the do’s and don’ts for acoustics in mass timber buildings.

Ineke Van Zeeland, M.Eng.
Senior Manager, Codes & Standards, Fire & Acoustics
Canadian Wood Council
Ineke has over 20 years of experience in fire protection engineering and codes and standards work, including participating in technical committees for fire test standards and building codes. She has participated in numerous research and development projects related to fire and acoustic performance of building systems, as well as projects related to standard fire testing and certification of building products.
Mass Timber in the Code and Alternative Solutions
This presentation will discuss how the use of mass timber fits into the current building code’s regulatory environment. It will also present some of the tools available to assist designers to demonstrate compliance to fire-resistance rating requirements for mass timber elements, as well as discuss information that can be useful in the development of alternative solutions using mass timber.
